AI is already part of the world young people are growing up in. It shows up in their classrooms and in the apps they use every day. The question is no longer whether girls will encounter AI. It’s whether they’ll have the knowledge and skills to understand it, question it, and use it responsibly.
At Techbridge Girls, we believe girls deserve more than a tutorial on the latest tool. They deserve the chance to understand how technology works, see where its limits are, and recognize why their own creativity, experiences, and judgment matter.
Understanding AI, Not Just Using It
Throughout the day, girls explored how AI learns from information, recognizes patterns, and why its results aren’t always accurate or reliable. They investigated the differences between AI and other technologies, experimented with emerging tools, and considered both the possibilities and limitations of artificial intelligence.
Rather than simply learning to use AI, girls were encouraged to ask important questions: How does this technology work? Can I trust its answers? What happens when it makes a mistake? And why does human judgment matter?
Our goal isn’t to encourage girls to depend on AI. It’s to equip them with the knowledge and critical thinking skills to engage with it safely, responsibly, and confidently.
Learning That Human Judgment Matters
One of the most encouraging outcomes was the girls’ understanding that AI has limitations. In the post-event survey, 98% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that AI can make mistakes, miss important information, or provide incorrect results. Their reflections reinforced this lesson: “When using Artificial Intelligence you must ALWAYS check for mistakes,” one girl shared. Another wrote, “I want to remember that AI is just to help us not to fully depend on that thing.”
These reflections highlight why AI literacy matters. Girls need to recognize that AI-generated information isn’t automatically accurate and that human knowledge and judgment remain essential.
From Understanding AI to Imagining Possibilities
During the afternoon’s AI for Community Challenge, girls worked together to identify real-world problems and imagine innovative solutions. They developed ideas, built prototypes, and explored how AI could support their creativity rather than replace it. Throughout the day, STEM role models and volunteers encouraged girls to ask questions, collaborate, and explore new possibilities for themselves.
The future of AI shouldn’t just happen around girls. They should have opportunities to help shape it.
Meeting a Growing Need for AI Literacy
As AI becomes more integrated into everyday life, the need for accessible, age-appropriate education continues to grow. Ignoring AI won’t prevent young people from encountering it, but helping them understand it can prepare them to navigate an increasingly digital world responsibly. Community interest in the Gulfport AI Exploration Fest reinforced this need, with 65 registrations for an event designed to serve 50 girls. Through AI Exploration Fests and other educational programs, Techbridge Girls is working to expand access to meaningful STEM and AI learning experiences.
With support from donors, community partners, and STEM volunteers, we can bring these opportunities to more girls, equipping them to understand, question, and help shape the technologies influencing their lives.
