Washington Manor Middle School

The word is out at Washington Manor Middle School that Techbridge is the place to be after school on Thursday afternoons. Thirty eight girls came to the first session and were eager to jump into learning about science and engineering. The girls got started building a spaghetti tower, and came up with creative methods for making the tallest. The next week the girls learned about polymers and had the chance to develop different formulas with glue and borax, trying to make a bouncy ball.

Exploring circuitry has introduced the girls to new territory. Using a solar panel with a light sensor and a 4 inch glass jar the girls made their own night lights. During the day the sun charges the battery and the light sensor activates the light it when it gets dark, illuminating their decorated jars. Techbridge's circuitry unit will give the girls an understanding of how a circuit works. For Halloween, the girls put this knowledge to work and made Halloween creatures with LED lights. The girls are looking forward to the hands-on experiments planned for the year. From CSI to visiting PG&E there is a lot of fun in store for Techbridge girls at Washington Manor.
