Montera Middle School
Techbridge is so popular at Montera Middle School that two programs are needed to support all the girls. The girls began the year with a water drop design challenge. In pairs, the students designed a device to keep a Dixie cup full of water from spilling when dropped from 8 feet in the air. They brainstormed and sketched their designs which were created with an assortment of random materials including plastic bags, paper plates, straws, tape, paper, and string. At test time the groups filled their cups with colored water and dropped their devices one by one onto a tarp below. As the cups splashed to the ground the girls could see how much water spilled, and how well their designs worked.
The year will be full of similar design challenges, as well as other projects such as building an electronic dance pad, learning about computer science with Pico Crickets, and discovering what it means to be a product designer. With the help of teachers Stephanie Berger, Natalie Mann, Candace Cofield , and Sarah Miller, this year is sure to be a success!
