Lincoln Elementary School

The fifth grade girls at Lincoln Elementary school began the year completing a series of design challenges. They had to create carrying devices for “radioactive” golf balls and design a recipe for the bounciest ball. Finally, as a transition into a unit on electricity the girls were given a piece of wire, a light bulb and a battery and were challenged to create a simple circuit that would light up the battery.

Now the Techbridge girls at Lincoln Elementary School are diving deep into electricity. They are preparing to take on circuitry and soldering as they work to create their very own LED creatures. This project was originally developed and introduced at the high school level but the 5th grade girls at Lincoln are up for the task! Using a coin cell battery, two LEDs, and wire, the girls solder together a simple circuit that becomes the basis for their creature. Throughout the process, the girls learn to be mindful of the polarity of their batteries and LEDs in order to get their circuit to work properly. Projects like this one prepare Techbridge girls for lessons in electronics that will be introduced in their science classes.
