“Design your fantasy trip – where do you want to go today?” Googler Susan Kwok asked the girls from Joaquin Miller. Using Google Earth, the girls got to visit Paris, London, New York and other dream destinations. By designing software to render famous landmarks in 3-D, Google engineers have enabled the girls to see the Eiffel Tower and downtown New York emerge from the screen. In another innovative feature, close-up camera shots allow the viewer to zoom in on detailed areas within satellite images. A chorus of “oohs and aahs” filled the room as Susan zoomed in on certain areas of Africa where they could see elephants and hippos.
Another Googler, Shannon Madison, led the girls in a game of Battleship, and through the process they learned how and why algorithms are so important to Web search. Topping the day off was a tour of the Googleplex, where the girls got to see everything from the dinosaur replica to solar-paneled roofs! It was exciting for the girls to not only learn about careers in computer science, but how a company can provide a fun, and environmentally friendly workplace.
