Frick Middle School

Wallace and Gromit, Gumby… these sound familiar? The girls of Frick Middle School can explain to you the amazing and intricate process of creating an animation film. For weeks these girls have been working on creating their very own claymation movie. The process began with writing an intriguing story. Then the girls continued with the drafting of a storyboard and creating their characters, props, and background. Finally, the girls got the chance to work with webcams and computers to capture and edit all the frames for their movie. While professional movies, such as Wallace and Gromit, have 24 frames per second, the 30 second claymation movies that the Frick girls are working on have 6 frames per second for a total of 180 frames. That is a lot of patience and perseverance!

After completing their claymation movies, the girls of Frick Middle School will explore the exciting world of mechanical engineering through the construction of their very own mechanical dogs and through several reverse engineering challenges. Students and alumni from UC Berkeley will lead the girls through a variety of appliance dissections including curling irons, coffee pots, and toasters. By the end of this year, the girls will surely view their world differently with their acquired skills in the engineering process!
