The group is small but strong at Mount Diablo HS in Concord, where the girls have been doing very different projects and learning about different types of engineers. With two dedicated teachers, Alice Davis and Karen Lowande, the group has developed a sense of community with both returning and new students.

Designing and building a car powered by a mousetrap tested the girl's patience and ingenuity, but in the end each pair was able to send their car down the "road" in the middle of the classroom. The girls also reviewed concepts of circuitry and soldering to build a light-up Halloween decoration.

Two role models from UC Berkeley, Madeline Ziser and Janeen Obeid, came with a clever construction management activity to teach the girls how important it is to plan your building schedule. With toothpicks and gummy bears as materials and candies as money, each pair's scheduled deliveries were occasionally lost, damaged, or incomplete, and the girls had to use their initiative and problem-solving skills to accommodate the changes.

With a trip to Autodesk and Pixar Animation Studios, the girls will get a taste of careers in computer science, art, and entertainment.
